Authoring the city
Urban space as a communication platform and a communication device

Individual researchers were invited to submit proposals for Authoring the city. The application deadline closed on 1 May 2003. Four researchers were recruited.

Conditions

+ The research should contribute to the innovation of the design discipline.

+ Candidates are expected to establish the aims, methodologies and realisation of their own projects as well as be engaged with what is being produced by fellow researchers.

+ Candidates are expected to give interim public presentations. Research should be concluded with a production and presentation. Research will be produced and publicised under the aegis of the Charles Nypels Foundation.

+ Candidates should indicate the duration of their research project. The research period has a maximum of 24 months.

+ Maastricht will function as a case study in the research. Comparative research in other cities, in the Netherlands, Europe or other continents, is in the realm of possibilities.

Research environment

+ Researchers are selected by the Charles Nypels Working Group, consisting of Gillian Crampton Smith, Paul Elliman, Wouter Vanstiphout and Annelys de Vet, together with the artistic staff of the Jan van Eyck Academie. The working group will keep tracking the projects.

+ Selected candidates get the position of researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie, post-academic institute for research and production in fine art, design and theory. They are assigned a studio and offered artistic and technical advice.

+ Selected candidates are offered a Charles Nypels Grant.
